My+troop+has+camped+on+this+Scout+reservation+for+many+years%2e+There+are+many+great+activites+to+do%2e+A+young+man+can+enter+scouting+at+11+years+of+age+and+never+get+through+all+the+different+camps+that+are+based+there+before+he+turns+18%2e+This+is+the+largest+Council+owned+camp+in+the+United+States+with+over+16%2c000+acres%2e+Next+year%2c+summer+of+2007+their+new+camp%2c+Claytor+Lake+will+open%2e+I+know+many+troops+from+all+over+the+United+States+go+there+every+year%2e+Check+out+the+camps+web+site%2e%0d%0a

Our+Troop+traveled+from+Florida+to+Virginia+to+attend+Camp+Powatan+and+it+was+worth+every+mile+that+we+drove%21++The+facilities+were+excellent%2c+especially+the+Dining+Facility+and+the+Nature+Lodge%2e++The+selection+of+merit+badges+and+Adult+Training+classes+were+outstanding%21++They+even+gave+the+Scoutmasters+a+tour+of+all+the+other+camps+in+their+Council+which+created+excitement+for+coming+back+the+next+summer%2e++The+wide+variety+of+camps+and+the+quality+of+their+facilities+will+bring+our+Troop+back+in+the+future%21%0d%0a%0d%0aJohn+Motley%0d%0aScoutmaster%0d%0aTroop+77%0d%0aNew+Port+Richey%2c+Florida%0d%0a

My+troop+absolutely+refuses+to+go+anywhere+but+Camp+Powahtan%2e+It+is+the+largest+council+owned+camp+in+the+US+and+it+is+the+greatest+fun+you+will+ever+have+in+scouting%2e+The+new+aquatics+base+is+going+to+be+awesome+and+will+offer+scouts+years+more+of+fun%2e+My+troop+has+been+going+there+for+52+years+and+this+summer+will+be+my+fourth%2e+I+still+haven%27t+finished+all+the+merit+badges+they+offer+in+the+Nature+lodge+alone%2e+It+is+a+great+facility+that+makes+me+proud+to+be+a+scout+in+the+Blue+Ridge+Mountains+council%2e+%0d%0a%0d%0aMatt+Rosendahl%0d%0aTroop+352%0d%0aSalem%2c+VA%0d%0a

Our+troop+camped+at+Camp+Powhatan+in+2011%2e++This+was+my+first+experience+at+a+Boy+Scout+Camp+and+I+was+was+duly+impressed%2e++As+my+son+had+recently+crossed+over+from+Cub+Scouts%2c+I+agreed+to+assist+with+the+first+year+program+called+Brown+Sea+Island%2e++Although+some+of+the+young+Eagle+Scouts+who+served+as+Instructors%2fTroop+Guides+for+the+individual+patrols+were+a+little+inexperienced%2c+they+generally+made+up+for+it+with+their+enthusiasm%2e++The+area+director+was+outstanding+and+the+program+was+very+well+organized+giving+the+scouts+exposure+to+pretty+much+all+of+the+Tenderfoot%2c+Second+Class+and+First+Class+skills+that+could+be+covered+during+the+week+at+camp%2e++While+I+would+have+liked+to+see+more+emphasis+on+the+Patrol+Method%2c+this+was+an+excellent+introduction+even+for+our+boys+who+had+already+gained+some+experience+and+had+been+very+well+prepared+during+their+time+as+Webelos%2e++The+only+complaint+here+was+that+the+program+guide+indicated+that+the+scouts+would+need+to+bring+gear+for+an+overnight+away+from+base+camp+and+this+had+been+eliminated+form+the+program%2e++Typical+of+Scout+camps%2c+program+changes+are+rarely+updated+in+the+literature+so+you+get+to+bring+gear+you+do+not+need%2e++The+only+other+downside+to+the+full+day+Brown+Sea+Island+program+was+that+it+prevented+first+year+scouts+form+taking+any+merit+badge+classes+unless+they+could+squeeze+into+one+of+the+open%2c+optional+classes+at+night%2e++Open+shoot+on+the+ranges+was+limited+to+those+scouts+enrolled+in+the+merit+badges+so+the+new+boys+could+not+even+get+on+the+range+at+all+either%2e++Prepare+your+boys+for+this+in+advance+so+it+will+be+less+of+an+issue%2e%0d%0a%0d%0aThe+rest+of+the+camp+was+likewise+superb%2e++The+foodservice+in+the+dining+hall+was+far+better+than+I+expected%2e++Many+items+were+made+from+scratch+and+the+portion+sizes+were+generally+sufficient%2e++%0d%0a%0d%0aBecause+I+spent+my+time+with+the+first+year+scouts%2c+I+did+not+get+to+see+much+of+the+teaching+going+on+elsewhere+at+camp+but+did+not+hear+any+complaints+about+the+counselors+either%2e++%0d%0a%0d%0aWe+thoroughly+enjoyed+the+week+at+Powhatan+and+I+would+welcome+another+visit+there+before+my+son+ages+out%2e%0d%0a
