Nestled+at+the+base+of+Black+Cap+Mountain+and+surrounding+Little+Fitts+Pond%2c+Katahdin+Scout+Reservation++%28also+called+Camp+Roosevelt%29+has+served+as+Katahdin+Area+Council%27s+outdoor+classroom+since+1921%2e+Located+15+miles+east+of+Bangor%2c+on+more+that+1800+acres+of+pristine+forest+land+with+a+300+acre+pond%2e+Camp+Roosevelt+is+named+in+honor+of+President+and+conservationist+Theodore+Roosevelt%2e+Katahdin+Scout+Reservation+offers+to+its+membership+a+year%2dround+%22Learning+Center+for+Outdoor+Skills%22%2e%0d%0a%0d%0a+++++++Camp+Roosevelt+has+16+campsites+that+will+accommodate+up+to+32+participants%2e+Campsites+have+either+2+person+tents+or+4+person+Adirondacks+complete+with+cots+or+bunks%2e+latrine+and+wash+stands+are+at+each+site%2e+Showers+are+available+at+several+locations%2e+The+James+E%2e+West+Campsite+is+for+units+that+need+handicap+facilities+during+the+summer+camp+season%2e++%0d%0a+%0d%0a++%0d%0a%0d%0aThe+hallmark+of+Camp+Roosevelt+is+the+log+cabin+style+dining+lodge%2e+It+was+built+in+1929+with+logs+harvested+from+the+reservation+and+is+one+of+the+largest+free+standing+log+cabins+in+the+country%2e+%0d%0a%0d%0aThe+Adam+Vickerson+Memorial+Health+Lodge+is+the+newest+additions+to+the+Camp%2e+The+Health+Lodge+is+open+24+hours+a+day+during+the+season+with+a+qualified+health+officer+on+duty%2e+%0d%0a%0d%0aThe+Doc+Mann+Nature+Lodge+is+full+of+Maine%27s+natural+treasures%2e+It+is+a+learning+center+for+the+Council+ecology+program%2e++%0d%0a%0d%0aThe+Wes+Shorey+Handicraft+Lodge+is+the+workshop+for+learning+and+building+wood+projects%2e++%0d%0a%0d%0aA+Trading+Post+operates+during+the+camp+season+with+souvenirs%2c+camping+items+and+snack+foods%2e+%0d%0a%0d%0aA+large+waterfront+area+with+opportunities+for+swimming%2c+row+boating%2c+canoeing%2c+kayaking%2c+and+small+boat+sailing%2e++%0d%0a%0d%0aOther+facilities+include+a+Quartermaster+Store%2c+Archery+and+Rifle+Ranges%2c+Scoutcraft+Area+and+a+special+place+where+everyone+gathers+for+a+campfire+overlooking+the+water+and+surrounding+mountains%2e++%0d%0a%0d%0aNew+for+2001+will+be+the+development+of+a+COPE+%28Challenging+Outdoor+Personal+Experience%29+challenge+course%2e+%0d%0a+%0d%0a%0d%0a

Camp+Roosevelt+is+situated+in+the+woods+of+Maine+on+Little+Fitts+Ponds+in+Eddington%2e+This+camp+has+been+in+existence+for+generations%21+I+am+not+sure+of+the+exact+date+the+camp+began%2c+however+I+know+the+program+was+up+and+running+in+1939+when+my+Dad+attended+a+two+week+session%21%2e+The+original+log+built+dining+hall+is+still+being+used+today%2c+it+is+said+that+this+was+built+sometime+in+the+1920%27s%2e+Forty%2dthree+years+after+my+Dad+attended+Camp+Roosevelt+my+son+started+his+first+year+there%2e+He+enjoyed+the+program+and+came+home+with+plans+to+go+again+the+following+year%2e+For+three+years+my+son+attened+C%2eR%2e+as+a+camper+earning+many+merit+badges+and+making+friends+from+all+over+Maine+as+well+as+the+rest+of+the+country%2e+%0d%0aHe+then+became+part+of+the+staff+and+spent+the+next+two+years+teaching+Mammal+Study%2c+Astronomy+%26+Geology%2e+While+teaching+Scouts+he+was+also+advancing+in+rank+himself+which+the+Camp+encourages+all+Counselors+to+do%2e+In+1997+my+son+received+the+rank+of+Eagle+Scout%2e+Camp+Roosevelt+has+played+a+tremendously+important+role+in+the+shaping+of+many+young+lives+in+this+community%2e+Camp+Roosevelt+has+much+to+offer+any+scout+new+or+veteran%2e+There+is+an+excellent+Water+Front+Program%2c+Rifle%2c+Shotgun+%26+Archery+Ranges%2c+Nature+Studies%2c+Crafts%2c+Cooking+and+much+more%2e+C%2e+R%2e+also+offers+specialty+weeks+for+older+Scout%2c+Explorers+%26+Varsity+Scout+Troops%2e+There+is+a+wonderful+staff+at+C%2eR%2e+and+the+scenery+is%2c+of+course%2c+gorgeous%21%21+Even+though+this+may+be+one+of+the+oldest+B%2eS%2eA%2e+camp+in+the+country+don%27t+let+that+deter+you+C%2eR%2e+has+all+the+modern+conviences+as+well+as+the+old+North+Woods+charm%2e+I+am+proud+that+we+in+Maine+have+such+a+wonderful+camp+to+send+our+boys+to+%2c+and+I+encourage+all+Scouts+everywhere+to+go+to+camp+%21%21%21+%0d%0a

This+report+is+coming+in+a+little+late%2c+but+I+thought+it+might+be+of+interest%2e%0d%0a+%0d%0aThe+Katahdin+Area+Council+runs+a+six+day%2ffive+night+residence+camp+each+year+for+Cub+Scouts+and+Webelos%2e+It+takes+place+at+the+Council%27s+Camp+Roosevelt+on+Little+Fitts+Pond%2c+Eddington%2c+Maine%2e+The+Council+owns+the+entire+shoreline+of+the+pond+and+a+substantial+portion+of+surrounding+land%2c+it+is+truly+a+beautiful+setting%3b+commercial+over+%3b%2d%29%2e%0d%0a+%0d%0aEach+Pack+provides+its+own+leadership+with+at+least+one+leader+per+six+boys%2e+We+attended+with+16+boys%286+Webelos%2d2%2c+6+Webelos%2d1%2c+3+Bears%2c+1+Wolf%29+and+4+full%2dtime+leaders%2c+1+den+chief%2c+and+3+%27relief%27+parents+that+came+in+for+a+day+or+evening%2e+All+leaders+must+have+Youth+Protection+training+and+this+is+offered+the+first+night+for+those+who+hadn%27t+completed%2e+As+an+aside%2c+camp+was+a+perfect+time+to+conduct+special+training%2c+such+as+Safe+Swim%2fSafe+Boating+and+refresher+courses%2e%0d%0a+%0d%0aThe+program+is+built+around+a+theme+each+year%2c+this+year%27s+was+%27Out+of+Africa%27%2e+The+camp+sites+were+named+after+African+countries+and+there+is+a+big+fair+on+Thursday+where+the+boys+come+in+costume+and+play%2frun+games%2e++Most+other+days+have+six+one%2dhour+periods+where+the+boys+engage+in+traditional+camp+activities+such+as+swimming%2c+archery%2c+bb%2dshooting%2c%0d%0acampcraft%2c+athletics%2c+crafts%2c+nature%2fscience%2c+and+hanging+out+at+the+trading+post%2e%0d%0a+%0d%0aOf+special+note+was+the+nature+program%2e+It+was+run+by+a+6th+grade+science+teacher+who+had+the+boys%3a%0d%0a+++%2d++solving+environmental+%27crimes%27+that+required+evidence+gathering%2c+%0d%0a++++++deduction%2c+and+simple+chemistry%0d%0a+++%2d++building+soda+straw+bridges%0d%0a+++%2d++observing+water+life+in+%27dam%2dology%27%0d%0a+++%2d++conducting+projects+towards+the+World+Conservation+badge%0d%0a+++%2d++putting+their+partners+inside+a+bubble%0d%0aIn+general%2c+a+hands%2don+science+program+the+entertained+and+taught%2e+It+gave+the+boys+a+good+start+on+a+couple+of+Webelos+Badges+and+Cub+achievements%2e%0d%0a+%0d%0aThe+waterfront+had+a+special+program+for+Webelos+that+let+them+earn+their+Aquanaut+and+start+to+learn+boat+and+canoe+handling%2e%0d%0a+%0d%0aThe+BB%2dshooting+program+was+especially+well+attended%2e+The+camp+conducts+a+very+tightly+run+and+safe+program+the+give+the+boys+an+understanding+of+gun+safety+and+lets+them+earn+the+BB%2dShooting+belt+loop%2e+An+equally+well+run+program+taught+the+fundementals+of+archery%2e+One+of+my+boys+shot+two+bullseyes+in+a+row%2e+A+bullseye+earns+you+an+arrowhead+necklace%2c+the+%27Cairo+Bullseye+Award%27%2e%0d%0a+%0d%0aThere+is+a+Webelos+Woods+program+that+take+first%2dyear+Webelos+on+a+3+mile+hike+up+a+hill+%28500%27%29+that+includes+an+eight+foot+rope+climb%2frepel%2e+The+thought+of+doing+it+simply+terrified+half+the+boys%2c+but+everyone+made+it+%28some+needed+a+two%2ddeep%2dobserved+shove+in+the+behind+to+get+up%29%2e+The+look+of+terror%28during%29+and+pride%28after%29+on+my+son%27s+face+%28I+was+observing+from+15ft+above%29+as+he+repelled+down+the+short+cliff+was+worth+the+walk%2e%0d%0a+%0d%0aSecond%2dyear+Webelos+take+an+overnight+camping+trip+about+a+mile+from+the+main+camp%2e+Foil%2dmeals+are+cooked+and+sleeping+is+under+the+stars+unless+there+is+rain+in+the+forecast%2e+The+six+boys+from+my+Webelos+den+are+all+looking+forward+to+that+next+year%2e%0d%0a+%0d%0aHomesickness+was+an+issue+this+year%2e+One+boy%27s+grandfather+had+died+the+Saturday+before+camp+and+his+family+decided+that+he+should+still+go+to+camp%2e+By+Tuesday+he+was+ready+to+go+home%2e+We+simply+used+the+stalling+tactic+with+some+quiet+councilling%2e+Tuesday+night%3a+it+was+too+late+to+call%2c+Wednesday+at+lunch%3a+we+had+to+work+on+costumes%2c+Wednesday+afternoon%3a+don%27t+you+want+to+stick+around+to+use+your+costume%3f%2c+Thursday+morning%3a+why+don%27t+we+call+after+the+fair%2c+after+the+fair%3a+%27I+think+I%27ll+stay+until+tomorrow%27+Success%21+%3a%29%0d%0a+%0d%0aCampcraft+taught+jackknive+safety+and+issued+Whittlin%27+Chips%2e+They+also+taught+basic+hike+safety+and+how+to+survival+getting+lost%2e+The+lessons+%28learned+last+year%29+came+in+handy+for+my+boy%2e+He+got+up+before+his+parents+while+camping+in+the+Maine+Woods+and+followed+our+dog+%28who+was+of+course+following+him+from+the+front%29+and+disappeared+for+an+hour+and+half%2e+He+stayed+on+the+road+and+kept+his+wits+as+much+as+you+can+expect+from+an+eight+year+old%2e+End+result+when+found%3a+thankful+parents+and+three+extra+mile+on+his+sneakers+%28he%27d+already+punished+himself+enough%29%2e%0d%0a+%0d%0aOverall%3a+It+was+a+great+week+and+ten+of+the+boys+will+be+coming+back+next+year%2e+The+six+2nd+year+Webelos+will+be+off+to+Scout+camp+next+year%2e++Three+leaders+are+making+plans+to+be+there+next+year%2c+the+other+plans+to+become+an+Asst%2e+Scoutmaster%2e%0d%0a+%0d%0aP%2eS%2e+++Given+the+%27Out+of+Africa%27+theme%2c+our+Pack+decided+to+sponsor+a+bottle+drive+to+raise+mo I+camped+here+for+4+years+and+worked+on+staff+for+4+more%2e+This+is+what+scout+camp+should+be%2e+The+lake+is+private%2c+and+the+camp+is+really+isolated+from+any+kind+of+noise%2e+I+had+the+best+nights+sleep+in+my+life+here%2donly+the+wind+blowing+through+the+trees+and+the+cool+fresh+air%21I+can+still+hear+the+bang+of+the+screen+doors+on+the+1929+dining+hall+which+will+be+replaced+in+2007+with+a+400+seat+modern+facility+with+a+spectacular+view+of+Little+Fitts+pond+and+Blackcap+mountain%2e+If+youve+never+been+to+KSR%2c+go%2e+You+may+never+want+to+go+anywhere+else+again%2e%0d%0a
