Camp+Tonkawa+is+nestled+under+huge+Oak+trees+in+southern+Taylor+County%2c+Texas%2e+Located+about+12+miles+south%2dsouthwest+of+Abilene+and+about+4+miles+west+of+Buffalo+Gap%2c+the+camp+is+on+FM89+next+to+the+Abilene+State+Park%2e%0d%0a%0d%0a%0d%0aCamp+Tonkawa+is+also+used+by+many+Non%2dScouting+groups+throughout+the+year%2e+4%2dH%2c+YWCA%2c+Big+Brothers+%2f+Big+Sisters%2c+Hunter+Safety+Education%2c+and+other+groups+make+use+of+our+facilities%2e+Our+%22Day+in+the+Woods%22+program+has+hosted+many+of+the+local+Elementary+Schools+and+other+groups+for+a+day+of+excitement%2c+learning%2c+and+fun+as+young+people+learn+skills%2c+play+games%2c+learn+about+nature%2c+and+take+part+in+other+activities%2e%0d%0a%0d%0a%0d%0aCamp+Tonkawa+is+often+used+for+Council+Cub+Scouting+events%2c+such+as+Cub+and+Me%2c+Cub+Scout+Day+Camp%2c+and+Family+Camp%2e+These+activities+are+designed+for+young+Scouts+to+spend+time+outdoors%2c+having+fun+as+they+learn%2e%0d%0a
We+attended+Camp+Tonkawa+the+week+of+June+9+through+the+15th%2c+2002%2e++Tonkawa+is+a+great+small+camp+just+outside+Buffalo+Gap%2c+Texas+and+all+of+16+miles+from+the+city+limits+of+Abilene%2c+TX%2e++Many+old+Oaks+and+quite+a+few+Cedar+trees+along+with+a+spackling+of+CottonWood+make+for+a+shady+environment%2e++It+was+cooler+than+the+Dallas%2c+Ft%2e+Worth+area+with+less+humidity%2e++%0d%0aThe+Facilities+are+some+of+the+best+I+have+ever+seen%2e++The+Dinning+Hall+is+an+Air+Conditioned%2c+glass+all+around+structure+with+a+very+large+Fire+Place+at+the+front+and+a+large+stone+stage+used+for+Distribution+of+verbal+Information%2e++There+is+a+Council+Training+Facility+at+the+camp+that+is+used+for+Scoutmaster+after+Lunch+meetings%2e++Very+nice+and+also+Air+Conditioned%2e++The+out+buildings+are+very+Scout+like+with+a+covered+pavilion+for+crafts+a+good+pool+and+some+Rustic+looking+Buildings+scattered+around%2e++We+found+the+Staff+well+prepared+for+Camp+and+almost+no+problems+with+Merit+Badges%2e++They+seem+to+have+a+good+quality+Staff+with+the+Camp+Director+and+Program+Director+working+together+very+well%2e++The+First+Year+Program+was+excellent+and+our+older+Scouts+found+enough+to+challenge+them+also%2e++There+was+actually+a+little+too+much+to+do+at+night%2c+which+left+little+time+for+the+Scouts+to+get+into+mischief+but+also+cut+down+on+sleep%2e++The+Camp+uses+Lake+Abilene+for+Rowing%2c+Canoeing%2c+Sailing+that+is+a+few+miles+down+the+road%2e++About+a+five%2dminute+drive+from+camp%2e++The+mud+is+West+Texas+Red+Clay+and+will+stain+anything+pretty+much+permanently%2e++We+very+much+enjoyed+the+small+population+with+only+six+or+seven+Troops+at+Camp+with+us+and+a+total+of+only+about+200+folks+including+adults%2e++Very+intimate+Summer+Camp+experience+and+a+great+change+from+the+Large+highly+used+camps+of+NE+Texas%2c+Southern+Oklahoma+and+Arkansas+that+we+have+attended+in+the+past+six+years%2e++The+B%2d1+Bombers+flying+overhead+landing+and+taking+off+from+Dyass+AFB+were+an+added+attraction+to+an+Airplane+Nut+such+as+myself%2e%0d%0a+++++++++++++Yours+in+Scouting%2c%0d%0a++++++++++++++++Joe+Marsh%0d%0aScoutmaster+Troop+86%0d%0a++++++++++++++++Bedford%2c+Texas%0d%0a++++++++++++++++Roadrunner+District%0d%0a++++++++++++++++Boy+Scout+%0d%0a++++++++++++++++Roundtable+Commissioner%0d%0a%0d%0a
