Camp+Alexander+has+been+around+since+1946%2e+The+staff+here+stay+dedicated+to+making+sure+that+the+scouts%2c+and+scouters%2c+enjoy+their+time+at+Camp+Alexander%2e+Camp+Alexander+offer+programs+in+Wilderness+Adventure%2c+Shooting+Sports%2c+Rock+Climbing%2c+Aquatics%2c+Handicraft%2c+Hiking%2fBiking%2fMountain+Boarding%2c+First+Class+Center%2c+Nature%2fConservation%2c+and+Outdoor+Skills%2e+Camp+Alexander+also+trys+to+serve+to+the+Scouter+community+by+offering+many+training+courses%2e+%22Delivering+the+Promise+of+the+Past%2e%22%0d%0a
Camp+A+is+a+really+nice+place%2e++They+have+a+new+director+this+year+but+there+seems+to+be+a+smooth+transition%2e++Our+troop+has+been+going+here+from+Texas+%28every+other+year%29+for+many+years+%2d+The+scouts+keep+voting+to+go+back%0d%0a
Our+troop+attended+Camp+A+for+the+first+time+this+year%2e+We+have+been+attending+out+local+council+camp+for+the+past+6+years+and+were+getting+tired+of+the+same+old+thing%2e+Our+experience+at+Camp+A+was+nothing+short+of+spectacular%2e+The+staff+was+outstanding+and+the+facilities+were+great%2e+We+had+a+scout+who+required+special+dietary+needs+and+the+head+of+the+cook+staff+gave+personal+attention+to+the+scout%27s+needs+at+every+meal%2e+A%2b%0d%0a
Attended+in+2009+and+2011%2e+High+quality+camp%2e+Good+staff+with+a+high%2dquality+camp+director+and+leaders+in+each+program+area%2e+Food+was+dramatically+better+in+2011+after+a+change+in+vendor%2e+World%2dclass+fishing+river%2c+too%2e+It%27s+our+local+camp%2c+but+there%27s+a+reason+other+troops+drive+500%2b+miles%2e%0d%0a
We+attended+Camp+A+during+week+3+this+year+and+overall+had+a+great+experience%2e++The+camp+director+and+his+staff+were+extremely+accommodating+and+extended+every+hospitality+to+us%2e++The+camp+grounds+are+beautiful+with+a+number+of+deer+wandering+around%2e++The+sites+consist+of+platform+tents+that+sleep+three%2e++If+you+are+coming+a+significant+distance+like+our+troop+did%2c+be+sure+to+order+the+camp+rental+cots+%28%245+each%29+as+early+as+possible+since+they+do+run+out%2e++Facilities%2c+including+the+tents+are+well+maintained+and+although+this+is+a+relatively+smaller+camp+than+those+we+have+gone+to+on+the+East+coast%2c+there+was+not+much+more+you+could+ask+for+with+a+few+notable+exceptions%2e++The+camp+has+invested+heavily+in+constructing+new+latrine+buildings+close+to+the+camp+sites%2e++This+is+certainly+appreciated%2e++A+bit+challenging+but+necessary+due+to+the+need+to+provide+their+own+water+treatment+facilities%2c+the+shower+houses+are+only+located+adjacent+to+the+swimming+pool%2e++For+our+camp+site%2c+this+was+not+too+bad+but+if+your+site+is+any+significant+distance%2c+this+could+be+problematic%2e++ALso%2c+the+trading+post+boasts+an+amazing+staff+who+treat+everyone+extremely+well+in+spite+of+the+very+limited+stock%2e++Merit+badge+booklets+for++a+number+of+classes+were+not+available+nor+were+the+meritbadge%2eorg+worksheets+that+the+program+guide+says+are+required%2e++In+fact%2c+I+found+few+if+any+of+the+counselors+utilizing+the+%22required%22+merit+badge+workbook%2e++The+camp+also+doubles+up+some+classes+%28basketry+and+woodcarving+as+a+single+class+period+for+example%29+which+results+in+there+simply+not+being+enough+time+for+a+scout+to+complete+the+required+projects+for+their+merit+badge%2e++Other+classes+are+crammed+into+an+1+hour+15+minute+class+and+if+the+young+counselor+does+not+adequately+prep+before+the+scouts+are+their%2c+they+spend+much+of+the+time+scrambling%2e++Having+said+this%2c+the+entire+staff+has+a+great+attitude+and+takes+feedback+to+heart%2e++Keep+in++ind+though+that+if+you+take+advantage+of+the+Thursday+white+water+rafting+trip%2c+there+are+no+merit+badge+classes+on+Friday+%2d+only+make+up+sessions+in+the+morning+due+to+the+camp+wide+Iron+Man+Competition+on+Friday+afternoon%2e++Some+of+the+stand+out+programs+were+the+ATV+class+%28sign+up+for+a+morning+session+as+it+often+rains+in+the+afternoon%29%2c+climbing%2c+mountain+biking%2c+and+the+health+and+safety+area%2e++On+Thursday+night%2c+the+first+aid%2c+emergency+prep+and+search+and+rescue+classes+team+up+for+a+simulation+exercise+that+is+well+thought+out+and+effective+in+requiring+teamwork%2e+%0d%0a%0d%0aThe+camp+has+a+policy+of+only+accepting+%22pre%2dapproved%22+volunteers+to+help+with+classes+and+other+work+around+the+camp+and+the+May+1+deadline+for+getting+your+application+in+means+that+they+are+unable+to+take+advantage+of+all+of+the+adult+talent+that+may+be+available+to+them%2e++%0d%0a%0d%0aThe+camp+encourages+scouts+to+leave+some+open+time+and+I+concur%2e++The+hiking+is+fabulous+and+there+are+amazing+views+around+the+camp%2e++%0d%0a%0d%0aFoodservice+was+also+a+positive+standout%2e++The+camp+has+a+system+of+giving+the+adults+larger+portions+of+the+main+entree+which+we+then+usually+immediately+provided+to+those+scouts+we+knew+would+need+more%2e++After+everyone+at+that+sitting+has+been+served%2c+they+call+for+seconds+which+the+adults+and+scouts+alike+can+obtain+until+they+run+out+but+there+is+always+peanut+butter+and+jelly+available+around+the+clock%2e++Much+of+the+menu+is+prepared+fresh+and+they+provide+ample+fresh+salad+at+lunch+and+dinner+daily%2e++Although+initial+portions+may+be+small%2c+none+of+our+scouts+or+adults+went+hungry%2e++The+chef%2fkitchen+manager+also+is+very+willing+to+work+with+any+special+dietary+concerns+and+was+always+available+during+meal+time%2e++%0d%0a%0d%0aOverall%2c+an+amazing+experience%2e++Certainly+was+worth+the+extra+effort+and+expense+of+traveling+over+2200+miles+to+get+there%2e++%0d%0a
