Black+Mountain+has+new+%28in+2000%29+archery+and+waterfront+facilities%2e++A+lot+of+the+tent+platforms+are+new%2c+too%2e%0d%0a%0d%0aThere+might+be+a+prettier+location+for+a+Scout+camp%2c+but+it%27s+hard+to+imagine%2e++Most+sites+are+wood+platform+wall+tents+with+an+Adirondack+or+two%2c+but+the+largest+site%2c+Maple+Point%2c+can+house+56+people+in+Adirondacks+and+four+in+tents%2e++The+camp+has+a+nice+COPE+course%2c+but+recently+lost+its+shotgun+and+black+powder+shooting+ranges+%28perhaps+a+side+effect+of+some+logging+activities+up%2dslope%29%2e%0d%0a%0d%0aThe+camp%27s+only+drawback+is+that+some+of+the+campsites+are+a+mile+from+the+dining+hall+over+a+moderately+tough+trail%2e+All+of+the+main+activity+areas+are+at+least+a+half%2dmile+from+the+dining+hall%2e++One+troop+per+meal+is+allowed+to+take+a+Scout%2drun+%22ferry%22+between+the+waterfront+activity+area+and+the+dining+hall%2e%0d%0a%0d%0aOther+than+the+inconvenient+location+of+the+dining+hall+%28a+minor+complaint%29%2c+the+camp+is+great%2e++We+had+some+problems+with+inexperienced+staff%2c+but+that+will+definitely+change+from+year%2dto%2dyear%2e++This+year+%282001%29+the+director+reported+that+over+half+of+his+staff+from+last+year+is+off+at+Jamboree+or+Philmont+this+year%2e%0d%0a

We+took+over+50+boys+to+Black+Mountain+in+the+summer+of+2004%2e++It+was+our+second+visit%2e%0d%0a%0d%0aGood%3a%0d%0a%0d%0aVERY+enthusiastic+camp+leadership%2e++Responsive+and+available%2e%0d%0a%0d%0aGood+staff%2e%0d%0a%0d%0aGood+program%2e++They+have+all+the+%22usual%22+programs%2c+and+have+added+a+%22ScoutComm%22+area+offering+non%2dtraditional+Merit+Badges+such+as+Communications%2c+Cinematography%2c+Radio%2c+Public+Speaking%2c+and+Photography%2e++Our+older+scouts+really+enjoyed+their+new+Horsemanship+program+%28which+includes+Horsemanship+Merit+Badge%29%2e++They+have+a+good+adult+award+program%2c+and+an+unusual+%28and+good%29+approach+to+scout+activities+on+the+last+day%2e%0d%0a%0d%0aOne+of+the+prettiest+camps+anywhere%2e%0d%0a%0d%0aThey+are+investing+in+improvements%2e++Since+our+last+visit+three+years+ago+they+have+added+a+new+shotgun%2c+rifle+and+archery+range%2c+and+COPE+course%2e++We+helped+roof+the+new+COPE+building+as+a+service+project%2e++They+tell+us+that+the+old%2c+falling%2ddown+shower+house+is+being+replaced+this+winter%2e%0d%0a%0d%0aIt%27s+a+smaller+camp+than+Parsons+and+Fire+Mountain+%28two+other+camps+in+the+area%29+and+we+appreciated+the+service+we+received%2e%0d%0a%0d%0aNeed+to+Improve%3a%0d%0a%0d%0aIt%27s+still+a+long+haul+to+the+dining+hall%2e++I+think+Scouts+have+been+complaining+about+this+for+75+years%2e%0d%0a%0d%0aThe+trading+post+was+poor%2e++Small+selection+and+high+prices%2e++This+was+a+strength+three+years+ago+%2d%2d+I+can%27t+figure+out+why+it+went+backwards%2e%0d%0a%0d%0aI+highly+recommend+this+camp%2e%0d%0a%0d%0aRick+Tyler%0d%0aAssistant+Scoutmaster%2c+Chief+Seattle+Council%0d%0a%0d%0a

This+was+my+return+the+Scoutmaster+role+after+10+years+away%2e+Black+Mountain+proved+to+be+great+welcome+back+%0d%0a%0d%0aThis+was+a+great+program%2e+Augmenting+the+typical+program%2c+with+Communications%2c+Cinematography%2c+Radio%2c+Public+Speaking%2c+and+Photography+impressed+our+older+scouts%2e+They+have+an+outstanding+new+rifle+range+and+COPE+course%2e+The+new+archery+and+shotgun+need+some+massaging+but+still+better+than+most+I+have+been+around%2e+%0d%0a%0d%0aMy+complaint+is+two+fold%2e+They+assigned+our+troop+a+very+inexperienced+camp+guide%2e+It+show+when+he+decided+that+the+camp+tour+was+more+important+than+getting+to+Monday+morning+chow+on+time%2e+Next%2c+the+trading+post+is+the+worst+I+have+seen+at+any+camp%2c+scout+or+otherwise%2e+They+ran+short+of+nearly+everything+nearly+everyday%2e%0d%0a%0d%0aThe+Scout+complained+continually+about+the+long+hike+to+the+dining+hall%2e+But+they+are+already+wanting+to+compare+this+years+camp+with+that+and+most+want+to+go+back%2e+%0d%0a%0d%0aI+recommend+this+camp+with+reservation%2e+%0d%0a%0d%0aKarl+Wood%0d%0aScoutmaster%2c+Troop+1490%0d%0aChief+Seattle+Council%0d%0a%0d%0a%0d%0a

Alot+is+said+about+the+walk+to+the+dinning+hall+and+I+have+done+it+more+times+then+I+can+count%2e++Being+a+camper+and+a+staff+member+here%2e++But+remember+walking+didnt+kill+anyone%2e++We+are+scouts+and+walking+is+good+for+you+and+part+of+the+experience%2e++A+walk+is+a+good+thing%2e++This+Camp+is+great+with+alot+of+great+memories%2e++You+should+go+and+get+your+great+memories+here%2e++%0d%0a

This+was+my+first+BSA+summer+camp+as+an+adult+leader+so+I+can%27t+really+compare+it+to+what+other+camps+offer+but+I+can+tell+you+of+my+experiences+at+Camp+Black+Mountain+in+the+Summer+of+2010%2e%0d%0a%0d%0aRight+off+the+bat+%2d+YES%2c+there+is+a+walk+from+the+camp%2fassembly+area+to+the+Dining+Hall%3b+it+is+roughly+%2e7+miles+from+flagpole+to+food%2e++I+think+this+is+a+bit+excessive%2c+but+like+a+previous+comment+said%2c+a+walk+in+the+woods+hardly+takes+away+from+the+scouting+experience%2e%0d%0a%0d%0aThere+was+a+good+selection+of+merit+badges+to+choose+from%2e++I+didn%27t+see+a+single+scout+sitting+around+camp+bored+and+missing+home+%28even+the+1st+year+scouts+were+engaged%29%2e++Although%2c+I+was+a+bit+disappointed+in+seeing+the+facilities+for+leatherworking+and+basketry%2e++I+am+sure+these+are+popular+every+session+so+I+would+have+thought+there+would+be+more+room+and+better+equipment+than+what+was+there%2e++In+a+single+room+%28not+much+larger+than+my+living+room%29%2c+they+were+conducting+4+MB%27s+simultaneously+while+sharing+2%2d3+instructors+between+them%2e++In+my+opinion+this+a+was+less+than+ideal+learning+environment%2e%0d%0a%0d%0aThe+food+was+something+to+be+remembered+for+sure%2e++Portions+were+small+to+put+it+politely%2e++A+couple+of+times%2c+I+wound+up+at+the+end+of+the+line+and+found+myself+on+the+short+end+of+the+stick%2e++I+did+notice+that+some+of+the+camp+staff+were+throwing+out+more+food+than+I+was+receiving+%28hopefully+it+was+just+my+eyes+and+stomach+playing+mean+tricks+on+me+and+not+really+happening%29%2e%0d%0a%0d%0aWhile+a+vast+majority+of+the+staff+did+their+jobs+quite+well%2c+I+didn%27t+even+meet+one+of+the+two+staffers+assigned+to+our+troop+until+the+last+day+of+camp%2e++The+other+staffer+was+there+pretty+regularly%2e%0d%0a%0d%0aIf+your+scouts+are+planning+on+water+activities%2c+there+is+a+lake+there+and+the+camp+has+a+small+fleet+of+canoes+%28mine+had+a+pretty+good+leak+in+it%29+and+row+boats%2e++This+camp+is+in+the+Pacific+Northwest+so+be+expecting+cold+water%2e++There+is+also+plenty+of+weed+growth+to+go+around+in+the+swimming+area%2e++I+know+the+weeds+are+out+of+the+control+of+the+camp%2c+but+I+am+just+letting+you+know+it%27s+there%2e%0d%0a%0d%0aSome+of+the+camp+sites+have+new+platforms+which+is+great%21++Our+site+was+not+one+of+them+unfortunately+but+that+was+our+choosing%2e++I+would+like+to+see+the+ones+in+bad+repair+or+with+board+flooring+get+replaced+with+the+new+plywood+%26+metal+platforms+in+future+visits+to+the+camp%2e%0d%0a%0d%0aThe+camp+museum+was+quite+a+treat%2e++I+found+it+to+be+very+interesting%2c+as+did+the+scouts+in+our+troop%2e++I+wasn%27t+sure+what+to+expect+when+we+went+in+and+I+was+pleasantly+surprised%2e++If+you+visit+Black+Mountain%2c+make+sure+you+visit+the+museum%2e%0d%0a%0d%0aOn+a+scale+from+0%2d10%2c+I+think+I+would+have+to+give+this+summer+camp+a+7%2e++Will+I+return%3f++Probably%2c+but+after+a+few+years+so+we+can+go+other+places+and+see+what+else+is+out+there+first%2e%0d%0a%0d%0aI+think+next+year+we+are+looking+at+Oregon+or+Idaho+for+summer+camp+%2d+something+new+for+the+whole+troop+%2d+but+that+is+up+to+the+boys+to+decide%2e%0d%0a%0d%0aD%2eS%2e%0d%0aASM+from+WA%0d%0a

Camp+Black+Mountain+is+now+closed+due+to+the+stupidity+of+the+Mount+Baker+Council+Executive+Board%2e+That+may+seem+harsh%2c+but+it+is+accurate%2e+The+Friends+of+Black+Mountain+were+given+a+challenge+to+prove+the+viability+of+the+camp+and+succeeded%2e+The+executive+board+closed+it+anyway%2e+I+strongly+advise+not+using+the+other+camp+%28Fire+Mountain%29%2c+but+that%2c+of+course%2c+is+up+to+you%2e%0d%0a
