Our+Troop+went+to+Camp+Kern+in+2002+and+had+a+great+time%2e++The+new+camp+director+had+put+together+a+great+staff%2c+the+food+was+great%2c+and+the+program+very+unique%2e++This+is+the+first+camp+we+have+been+too+that+was+so+good+we+will+come+back+in+2003%2e%0d%0a
I+served+on+this+camp+staff+for+several+years+in+the+early+90%27s+it+is+very+beautiful+and+had+an+outstanding+program%2e++The+Camp+Director+from+the+90%27s+is+back+at+the+camp+now+after+a+few+rough+years+%281999%2d2001%29%2c+2002+was+wonderful+from+all+that+I+heard+from+local+troops+that+attended+last+year%2e++My+troop+signed+up+again+this+year+for+the+first+time+since+1998%2e++The+information+has+been+great+thus+far+and+we+are+looking+foward+to+a+great+summer+camp+week%2e%0d%0a
We+just+returned+from+Camp+Kern%2c+the+location+is+great%2c+but+the+camp+facilities+%28mess%2c+aquatics%2c+transportation+barges%29+were+overwhelmed+by+the+number+of+troops+in+camp+for+the+week%2e++The+open+session+program+was+a+hit+with+the+boys+but+some+merit+badge+areas+%28Outdoor+Skills%2c+Aquatics%2c+Nature%29+lacked+the+resources+%28books%2c+staff%2c+equipment%29+needed+to+properly+earn+the+offered+merit+badge%2e++The+cabin+sites+are+OK+for+scouts+but+the+tent+sites+all+had+problems+with+drainage+and+tents+that+are+30+years+old+that+leak+very+badly+in+the+rain%2e++Bottom+line%2c+this+camp+needs+work+in+the+facilites+and+program+area+or+reduce+the+number+of+scouts+that+attend+each+week%2e%0d%0a
This+was+my+9th+Scout+camp+and+my+son%27s+3rd+Scout+camp+and+it+was+the+pits%2e++When+it+rained%2c+the+tents+were+awash+with+2+%2d+4+inches+of+mud+due+to+poor+placement%2fsetup+and+most+had+holes+so+they+also+leaked%2e++The+food+was+sub%2dpar+and+many%2c+many+scouts+got+sick+and+had+to+go+home+early%2e++The+open+program+was+subject+to+abuse+%28merit+badges+issued+but+not+earned%29+and+there+were+unqualified+MB+councilors%2e++On+top+of+this%2c+the+barges+were+broken+the+majority+of+the+time%2e++A+poor+reflection+on+the+Scouting+program+in+general%2e++Took+one+for+the+team+and+will+not+return%2c+ever%2e%0d%0a
My+first+Scout+Camp+that+I+attended+was+Camp+Kern%2e++It+was+1967%2e++The+prior+week+was+our+50+mile+hike+over+the+Sierras+to+the+Camp%2e++I+was+a+young+scout+at+that+time+and+still+remember+most+of+that+which+went+on+at+Camp%2e++That+was+41+years+ago%2e++I+truly+enjoyed+Camp+and+the+memories+that+it+gave+me%2e++I+earned+my+first+5+merit+badges+there%2e++From+reading+some+of+the+prior+comments+it+sounds+like+Camp+Kern+could+not+only+use+money+but+also+all+types+of+help%2e++I+hope+that+it+receives+both+soon%2e++%0d%0a
Our+troop+send+a+travel+group+to+a+long+range+camp+outside+San+Diego+council+every+year%2c+so+we+have+extensive+experience%2e+This+is+an+EXCELLENT+Camp%2e+%0d%0aIn+2009+the+council+decided+to+invest+in+Kern+with+money+and+a+new+staff%2e+As+such%2c+it+has+become+one+of+the+best+scout+camps+in+California+again%2e+Dave+Hopkins+moved+over+to+Kern+after+8+years+running+Cherry+Valley+on+Catalina%2c+and+he+brought+his+concepts+and+many+of+excellent+staff+with+him%2e+%0d%0aThe+location+is+breathtakingly+beautiful+in+the+tall+pines+on+Huntington+Lake%2c+though+be+aware+the+camp+is+on+a+hillside+at+7000+ft%2e%2e%2e%2e+all+up+and+down%2e+The+waterfront+is+revamped+and+there+is+no+better+sailing+as+Huntington+is+rated+one+of+the+top+4+sailing+lakes+in+the+Northern+Hemisphere%2e+%0d%0aMerit+badges+are+taught+to+the+requirements+and+a+wide+variety+are+offered%2e+Rifle+shooting+is+FREE%2e+The+food+is+excellent+and+plentiful%2e+%0d%0aMost+important+is+the+staff%2e+Each+troop+is+assigned+a+couple+of+%22camp+friends%2c%22+staff+that+spends+spare+time+in+the+camp+site+and+gets+the+troop+for+breakfast+and+dinner%2c+sitting+with+the+unit+at+every+meal%2e+The+scouts+had+an+excellent+time%2e%0d%0a%0d%0aProfessional%2c+Courteous%2c+well%2dmanaged%2c+reasonably+prioed%2e+What+more+do+you+need%3f%0d%0a%0d%0aJimm+H%2e%2c+Scoutmaster%2c+troop+681%2c+San+Diego%2c+CA%0d%0a
Camp+Kern+was+a+%22shot+in+the+dark%22+camp+for+us%2e+We+traveled+7+hours+from+Reno%2c+NV%2e+The+programs+offered+by+Camp+Kern+brought+us+there%2e+The+horsemanship+program+is+great%2c+as+well+as+the+waterfront+area%2e+Small+boat+sailing+was+a+hit+with+our+troop%2e%0d%0aThe+camp+needs+a+LOT+of+TLC+for+repairs+to+the+campsites+and+program+areas%2e+The+staff+didn%27t+seem+to+know+or+be+able+to+answer+questions+about+posted+events%2e+The+fire+bowl+area+is+terrible+to+sit+as+the+seating+area+has+eroded+away+%2d+there+is+not+a+flat+spot+to+sit+and+enjoy+the+skits+and+presentations%2e+Camp+Kern+is+an+alpine+camp%2c+so+be+prepared+to+hike+up+and+down+everywhere%2e+%0d%0aKern+has+flush+toilets+and+hot+showers+%2d+which+are+great+%2d+if+the+water+is+available%2e+Twice+during+our+trip+Kern+ran+out+of+water%2e+%0d%0aThe+food+was+really+good+and+plentiful+%26+the+staff+really+try+to+please%2e+Overall%2c+I+would+give+Kern+2%2e5+of+5+stars%2e+Not+going+to+book+a+return+visit%2e%0d%0a
