During+the+week+of+June+9%2d15%2c+2002%2c+our+troop+attended+summer+camp+at+the+George+W%2e+Pirtle+Scout+Reservation+near+Gary%2c+Texas%2e+The+camp%2c+operated+by+the+East+Texas+Area%0d%0aCouncil+in+Tyler%2c+is+260+miles+from+where+we+live%2e+This+was+our+troop%27s+second+visit+to+Camp+Pirtle+as+we+last+attended+the+camp+in+1997%2e%0d%0a%0d%0aThis+was+my+23rd+trip+to+summer+camp%2e+We+had+32+boys%2c+1++female+Venturer+and+10+adults+at+camp%2e+From+an+overall+standpoint%2c+I+believe+Pirtle+provides+an+excellent%0d%0asummer+camp+experience%2e%0d%0a%0d%0aIn+this+evaluation%2c+I%27m+using+these+ratings%3a%0d%0a++++++++++++++++++A+%3d+Excellent%0d%0a++++++++++++++++++B+%3d+Above+Average%0d%0a++++++++++++++++++C+%3d+Average%0d%0a++++++++++++++++++D+%3d+Below+Average%0d%0a++++++++++++++++++F+%3d+Unsatisfactory%0d%0a%0d%0aPre+Camp+Information+and+Ease+of+Arranging+the+Trip%0d%0a%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%0d%0aGrade+%3d+C%0d%0aThe+leaders%27+guide+is+adequate%2e+The+only+problem+we+had+prior+to+the+trip+was+that+the+council+office+misplaced++our+reservation+form%2e+However%2c+this+wasn%27t+a+significant%0d%0aproblem+as+we+were+still+able+to+get+our+first+choice+of+camp+dates%2e+There+seems+to+be+a+lack+of+communications+between+the+council+office+in+Tyler+and+the+camp+as+the%0d%0acamp+did+not+have+a+record+of+a+payment+and+merit+badge+schedule+%28for+one+boy%29+that+we+sent+in+to+the+council+a+month+prior+to+our+arrival%2e+This+didn%27t+turn+out+to+be+a+problem+as+the+boy+was+able+to+get+in+the+classes+he+desired%2e%0d%0a%0d%0aCheck+in%2fout+Process+%2d+Arrival+%26+Departure%0d%0a%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%0d%0aGrade%3a+A%0d%0aNo+problems+and+everything+went+well%2e%0d%0a%0d%0aOur+Campsite%0d%0a%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%0d%0aGrade+%3d+D%0d%0aThe+campsite+was+nice+but+we+had+to+share+it+with+another+troop+which+resulted+in+a+very+crowded+site%2e+We+had+the+second+largest+contingent+during+our+week+at%0d%0acamp+so+being+assigned+to+a+larger+campsite+would+have+been+nice%2e%0d%0a%0d%0aLatrine+%26+Shower+Facilities%0d%0a%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%0d%0aGrade+%3d+D%0d%0aThe+latrine+in+our+campsite+was+not+very+good%2e+As+the+week+progressed%2c+there+was+significant+odor%2e+By+the+third+week+of+camp%2c+it+will+really+be+nasty%2e+The+shower+house%2c+shared+by+several+sites%2c+was+nice+but+there+was+no+hot+water+during+the+last+two+days%2e+The+East+Texas%0d%0aArea+Council+needs+to+make+significant+improvements+in+this+area%2e%0d%0a%0d%0aCamp+Administration%0d%0a%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%0d%0aGrade+%3d+A%2b%0d%0aThe+best+Camp+Director%2fProgram+Director+combination+I%27ve+encountered+while+attending+23+summer+camps%2e+The+Program+Director+was+simply+outstanding+as+he+served+as+Program%0d%0aDirector+at+the+Philmont+Training+Center+for+several+years%2e+Overall%2c+a+very+well+run+camp+with+concerns+addressed+very+quickly%2e%0d%0a%0d%0aCamp+Commissioner+Program%0d%0a%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%0d%0aGrade+%3d+N%2fA+as+the+camp+didn%27t+have+a+Commissioner+program%2e%0d%0a%0d%0aCamp+Staff%0d%0a%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%0d%0aGrade%3a+B%0d%0aGenerally%2c+the+staff+was+excellent%2e+There+were+one+or+two+members+not+up+to+standard+and+I+heard+that+one+of+these+was+dismissed+prior+to+the+end+of+the+week%2e+One+of%0d%0athe+staff+members+was+an+International+Scout+from+Denmark+and+we+really+enjoyed+spending+time+with+him%2e%0d%0a%0d%0aMerit+Badge+Program%0d%0a%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%0d%0aGrade%3a+B%0d%0aGenerally%2c+the+merit+badge+classes+were+excellent+and+our+Scouts+enjoyed+them%2e+The+shooting+sports+area+was+especially+good%2e+By+the+end+of+the+week%2c+it+was+apparent%0d%0athat+instructors+were+not+taking+roll+each+day+as+boys+were+getting+credit+for+work+not+done%2e+The+Program+Director+said+he+would+fix+this+during+future+weeks%2e+We+didn%27t+have+any+Scouts+in+the+first+year+camper+program+but+a+couple+of+adults+from+other+troops+seemed+to+rate%0d%0athe+program+rather+low+as+the+boys+were+bored+during+the+Monday+session%2e%0d%0a%0d%0aActivities+for+Older+Scouts%0d%0a%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%0d%0aGrade%3a+A%0d%0aWe+had+four+older+boys+in+the+C%2eO%2eP%2eE%2e+program+and+they+had+a+great+time%2e+Our+female+Venturer+completed+B%2eS%2eA%2e+Lifeguard%2e+There+were+rappelling+and+climbing+programs%0d%0atoo%2c+with+two+towers+including+one+that+is+65+ft%2e+high%2e++The+camp+has+a+%22blob%22+which+the+boys+enjoyed%2c+and+provided+lots+of+spare+time+for+swimming%2c+rifle+shooting%2c+shotgun+shooting%2c+etc%2e+Camp+Pirtle+provided+special+daily+times+for+adults+to+take+part+in+the%0d%0ashooting+and+climbing+programs+too%2e%0d%0a%0d%0aSpecial+Activities%0d%0a%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%0d%0aGrade%3a+A%0d%0aThere+were+special+activities+each+evening%2e+%22Follow+Me+Boys%22+was+shown+on+Tuesday+night%2e+Actually%2c+in+my+opinion+anyway%2c+there+were+too+many+special+organized%0d%0aevening+activities+and+it+would+have+been+nice+to+have+one+night+free+for+troop+activities+in+the+campsite%2e%0d%0a%0d%0aChapel+Progam%0d%0a%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%0d%0aGrade%3a+A%2b%0d%0aThe+camp+provided+a+15+minute+chapel+program+at+7+a%2em%2e+each+morning%2e+It+was+absolutely+the+best+chapel+or+vespers+program+I%27ve+ever+seen+anywhere%2c+including%0d%0aPhilmont%2e+The+same+individual+has+been+leading+this+for+about+15+years+and+he+does+an+outstanding+job%2e%0d%0a%0d%0aDining+Hall+and+Food%0d%0a%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%0d%0aGrade%3a+A%0d%0aThe+food+was+as+good+or+better+than+the+food+at+any+other+camp+I%27ve+attended%2e+%22Seconds%22+were+available+for+all+meals+so+there+was+no+excuse+for+going+away+hungry%2e%0d%0aThe+dining+hall+is+large+and+there+are+fun+activities+after+each+meal%2e+One+of+our+boys+won+the+%22latex+glove+milking%22+contest+while+another+won+the+%22fruit+loop+nose%0d%0aspitting%22+contest%2e+I+even+successfully+defended+my+1997+title+in+the+Scoutmaster%27s+dance+contest%2e+Fortunately%2c+no+photos+of+this+are+available%2e%0d%0a%0d%0aTrading+Post%0d%0a%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%0d%0aGrade%3a+B%0d%0aBetter+than+most+trading+posts+but+there+were+no+camp+mugs+at+Pirtle%2e+Is+this+a+new+trend+at+other+camps%3f%0d%0a%0d%0aOther+Buildings%2fFacilities%0d%0a%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%0d%0aGrade%3a+B%0d%0aThe+camp+has+a+nice%2c+new+campfire+amphitheater%2e+Other+facilities+were+adequate%2e%0d%0a%0d%0aOverall+Grade%3a+B%2b%2fA%2d%0d%0a%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%2d%0d%0aOverall%2c+we+had+a+nice+week+at+Camp+Pirtle+and+our+Scouts+voted+overwhelmingly+to+keep+the+camp+in+our+summer+camp+rotation%2e+The+East+Texas+Area+Council+needs%0d%0ato+improve+the+latrine+facilities%2e+The+waterfront+also+has+great+untapped+potential+that+could+make+Pirtle+one+of+the+top+aquatics+camps+in+Texas%2e%0d%0a%2d%2d%0d%0aCalvin+H%2e+Gray%0d%0aScoutmaster%2c+Troop+405%0d%0aGeorgetown%2c+Texas%0d%0a

I+would+like+to+address+the+previous+post+made+on+Mar+2+2007%2e+While+I+defend+your+right+have+you+own+opinion+about+the+quality+of+the+camp+which+you+attended%2c+I+would+like+to+ask+you+not+to+lie+about+the+camp%92s+staff%2e+I+remember+the+incident+of+which+you+speak%2e+Some+campers+reported+smelling+marijuana+in+the+vicinity+of+the+Staff+Area%2c+and+as+per+protocol%2c+the+Camp+Director+called+in+a+drug+dog%2e+The+dog+did+not+detect+any+illegal+substances+in+the+Staff+area%2c+nor+the+cook%92s+cabin+which+is+located+just+adjacent+to+the+Staff+Area%2e+Reports+of+drug+and+alcohol+use+on+camp+premises+is+not+a+matter+the+camp%92s+leadership+takes+lightly%2c+and+any+staff+member+caught+drinking+or+using+drugs+while+at+camp+is+immediately+terminated+and+legal+action+taken+against+them%2e+%0d%0a%09These+are+rules+all+staff+members+have+to+live+by%2e+I+have+been+on+staff+for+four+years+%282004%2d2007%29+as+a+Pool+Instructor+and+Waterfront+Director%2c+and+would+love+to+go+back+for+a+fifth+year%2e+Unfortunately%2c+school+is+going+to+prevent+me+from+returning+in+%9208%2c+but+I+am+going+to+miss+it%2e+Aquatics+for+Life%21%0d%0a%0d%0aWWW%2c%0d%0aMatt+McCarley%0d%0aFormer+GWP+Waterfront+Director+%28%9206%2d%9207%29%0d%0aFormer+GWP+Pool+Instructor+%28%9204%2d%9205%29%0d%0a%0d%0a

June+2008+%2d+3rd+week+of+camp%0d%0a%0d%0aStaff+was+AWSOME%2e%2e%2e%2eso+much+energy%2e%2e%2ethey+really+pumped+the+scouts+up%2e++They+were+fun%2c+encouraging%2c+patient+and+extremely+friendly%2e++We+attend+this+camp+every+other+year%2e++They+have+a+really+diverse+program+of+merit+badges%2e++Great+aquatics+program+with+a+new%2c+big+water+slide%2e++The+climbing+instructor+worked+with+5+of+our+scouts+to+finish+their+camping+merit+badge%2e++Most+of+the+merit+badges+were+completed+at+camp%2e++They+had+a+computerized+report+daily+on+the+badges+to+monitor+our+scouts+progress+and+attendance%2e%2e%2every+helpful%2e++We+had+a+1st+time+troop+from+Dallas+with+71+kids+in+their+group%2e++The+leadership+seemed+very+pleased%2e++%0d%0a%0d%0aThe+campsite+have+plenty+of+shade+and+are+clean%2e++The+latrines+are+always+a+little+to+be+desired+%2d+try+orages+hanging+in+the+bathroom+from+a+sack+and+dryer+sheets%2e%0d%0a%0d%0aThe+food+was+very+good+%2d+kid+friendly+but+adult+likable%2e++I+encourage+you+to+try+the+East+Texas+hospitality%2e%0d%0a%0d%0aJan%0d%0aLufkin%2c+TX%0d%0aTroop+134%0d%0a

Led+our+troop+to+Winter+Camp+in+December+of+2008%2e++Very+well%2drun+camp%2e++Check%2din+and+check%2dout+smooth+and+painless%2e++Got+to+our+campsite+easily+and+hassle%2dfree%2e++Food+was+okay%2c+not+great%2c+but+I%27ve+had+much+worse+at+Scout+camps%2e++Adults+showers+and+bathroom+were+plush+by+Scout+standards%2e++Merit+badge+instruction+was+for+the+most+part+good+with+some+notable+exceptions%2e++Staff+was+very+friendly+and+helpful%2e++Would+definitely+do+another+Winter+Camp+there%2e%0d%0a
