Surprisingly tough hiking in some areas. Our Philmont veterans were impressed with the difficulty. Trails are often root covered, so footing is hard on the feet. Water filters are problematic, be prepared to boil. Water treatment mandatory. Groups limited to 8, smaller preferred. weather very unpredictable. Excellent way to study Lake Superior. Must boat, ferry or fly to island. Closest is boat from Grand Portage Minnesota. No roads, hiking and limited canoeing portages only. Easy to spend a week for typical groups and not retrace yourself. Interesting moose/wolf balance ecology, well studied and unique to IRNP. Low impact camping/backpacking only.
