Pettigrew State Park encompasses 16,828 acres most of which is the 16,000 acre Lake Phelps. The park offers boating, fishing, hiking, nature studies, historic structures, boat launching facilities and 13 tent / trailer sites. Youth Camping--There is primitive youth tent camping available. Facilities include tent pads, picnic tables, grill, and pit privy. Water is located nearby. To ensure availability of the site, reservations are advised.<br><br>Historic Somerset Place, built in 1830 still stands and is the site of an annual reunion of descendants of the 300 slaves who once worked this plantation. In the early nineteenth century, Somerset Place was one of the four largest farms in North Carolina.<br><br>Many Indian artifacts have also been found in the area, along with two dugout canoes, possibly 4,000 years old. Each September, Indian Heritage Week is held at Pettigrew. The history of the Algonquin Indians and demonstrations of how they made tools, pottery and jewelry are held. <br><br>Trails:<br><br>Hiking Trails--There are almost nine miles of hiking trails available at Pettigrew State Park. <br>CEMETERY TRAIL is .34 miles; BEE TREE TRAIL (including Carriage Trail) is 1.3 miles; <br>MOCCASIN TRAIL is 2.8 miles<br> MOROTOC TRAIL is 4.2 miles.<br><br>Bike Trails-- MOROTOC TRAIL leads from the Cypress Point Access to Western Canal. One can follow the public road to the Pettigrew family cemetery, group camp, park office and Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge.
