From+the+Press%2dRegister+in+May+11+2010%0d%0a%0d%0ahttp%3a%2f%2fblog%2eal%2ecom%2flive%2f2010%2f05%2fscouts_acquire_pinetreat%2ehtml%0d%0a%0d%0a%0d%0aThe+Mobile+Area+Council+of+the+Boys+Scouts+of+America+have+taken+over+the+lease+for+Camp+Pinetreat%2c+a+popular+camp+in+Baldwin+County+operated+for+many+years+by+the+Presbyterian+Church%2e+In+addition+to+using+the+facility+as+a+Scout+camp%2c+the+council+plans+to+continue+the+tradition+of+renting+the+facility+to+other+groups%2c+according+to+Michael+Hartigan+III%2c+executive+director+of+the+Mobile+Council%2eCamp+Pinetreat+in+rural+Baldwin+County+has+a+new+lease+on+life%2e+%0d%0aOn+April+1%2c+the+Mobile+Area+Council+of+the+Boy+Scouts+of+America+assumed+the+remaining+55+years+on+the+lease+on+the+popular+camp+from+the+Presbyterian+Church+and+is+busy+with+maintenance%2e%0d%0a%0d%0a%22For+many%2c+many+years%2c+people+from+this+community+have+gone+to+this+camp+and+have+had+a+positive+experience%2e+Those+people+probably+think+the+camp+is+closed%2e+We+want+people+to+know+that+the+Boy+Scouts+of+America+are+now+managing+the+property+and+they+are+welcome+to+return+again%2c%22+said+Michael+J%2e+Hartigan+III%2c+executive+director+and+chief+executive+officer+of+the+Mobile+Area+Council%2e%0d%0a%0d%0aThe+acquisition+didn%27t+cost+the+Boy+Scouts+any+money%2c+Hartigan+said%2e%0d%0a%0d%0aThe+Rev%2e+Julian+Walthall%2c+pastor+of+Spanish+Fort+Presbyterian+Church%2c+said+he+was+thrilled+to+see+the+camp+pass+to+such+a+worthy+organization%2e%0d%0a%0d%0a%22Many+people+have+enjoyed+Camp+Pinetreat+through+the+years%2e+We%27re+excited+that+a+new+group+has+found+a+new+use+for+such+a+fine+place%2c%22+Walthall+said%2e+%22We%27re+very+excited+that+its+history+will+be+ongoing%2e%22%0d%0a%0d%0aThe+Presbytery+never+owned+the+camp%2c+Walthall+said%2e+The+property+%2d%2d+162+acres+north+of+Bay+Minette+near+Interstate+65+just+off+Ala%2e+287+%2d%2d+was+leased+to+the+Presbytery+in+the+1960s+by+John+D%2e+Crosby+of+Bay+Minette%2e%0d%0a%0d%0aThe+Presbytery+of+South+Alabama%2c+which+had+a+99%2dyear+lease+on+the+property%2c+used+Pinetreat+as+a+church+camp+and+rented+it+to+other+groups%2e%0d%0a%0d%0aBut+when+expenses+started+topping+%24100%2c000%2c+it+put+a+burden+on+the+church%2c+officials+indicated%2c+and+in+the+face+of+declining+usage+and+rising+operating+expenses%2c+the+Presbytery+decided+to+find+a+group+that+could+put+the+camp+to+good+use%2e%0d%0a%0d%0aOnce+the+Presbytery+decided+to+give+it+up%2c+a+number+of+groups+looked+at+the+camp%2c+but+none+expressed+interest+in+acquiring+it%2c+Walthall+said%2e%0d%0a%0d%0aThe+church+then+contacted+the+Boy+Scouts%2e%0d%0a%0d%0a%22They+appreciate+that+it+is+near+Mobile+and+centrally+located%2c%22+Walthall+said%2c+adding+that+the+Scouts+use+of+the+facility+fits+in+with+the+vision+of+the+Crosby+family%2e%0d%0a%0d%0aThe+acquisition+of+Pinetreat+means+that+the+Boy+Scouts+now+have+two+camping+facilities%2e%0d%0a%0d%0aThe+Maubila+Scout+Reservation%2c+the+main+camp+near+Jackson%2c+will+continue+to+be+used+for+summer+camp+and+other+training%2c+Hartigan+said%2e+Pinetreat+will+offer+a+central+location+for+weekend+training+and+activities+for+the+councils+226+Cub+Scout%2c+Boy+Scout+and+co%2ded+groups+from+Baldwin%2c+Mobile%2c+Clarke+and+Washington+counties%2e%0d%0a%0d%0a%22This+camp+is+geographically+in+the+center+of+the+counties+we+serve%2c%22+Hartigan+said%2e+%22It%27s+close%2c+so+we+can+do+more+activities+that+we+couldnt+have+done+before%2e+Both+camps+complement+each+other%2e%22%0d%0a%0d%0aA+number+of+minor+repairs+and+updates+are+needed%2c+including+fixes+to+a+house+that+will+eventually+serve+as+quarters+for+a+paid+ranger%2c+he+said%2e+The+camp+is+expected+to+be+ready+in+September%2e%0d%0a%0d%0aExpenses+for+the+camp+are+expected+to+run+from+%2455%2c000+to+%2465%2c000+annually%2e%0d%0a%0d%0aTo+help+meet+those+expenses%2c+the+camp+will+be+available+for+rent+to+other+groups+and+organizations+wishing+to+hold+camps%2c+retreats%2c+picnics%2c+reunions+and+the+like%2e+Next+year%2c+the+council+hopes+to+add+events+to+the+venue+in+efforts+to+raise+money+in+hopes+of+breaking+even%2c+Hartigan+said%2e%0d%0a%0d%0aOne+major+project+that+the+council+will+seek+help+on+will+be+the+installation+of+parking+lots%2c+Hartigan+said%2e+Additional+projects+later+on+may+include+revamping+of+the+existing+chapel%2c+building+a+camp+store+and+adding+BB+and+archery+ranges%2c+he+said%2e%0d%0a%0d%0aHartigan+also+said+any+financial+support+from+interested+donors+will+help+offset+operating+costs%2e%0d%0a%0d%0a
